On my first cruise, I assumed the required gratuities covered everything — cruises get sold as "all-inclusive," after all. I was a little embarrassed to learn later that while extra tips aren't required, they're absolutely appreciated and often quietly expected. Here's the quick version of what I've figured out since.
The Included (a.k.a. Prepaid) Gratuities
Most major lines — Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess, Holland America, and the rest — automatically add a set gratuity to your onboard account. It typically runs around $20 per person, per day (it varies by line), and the cruise line splits it among cabin stewards, waitstaff, bartenders, and plenty of behind-the-scenes crew you'll never meet.
You can prepay these when you book, or let them hit your stateroom account on the last night. I always prepay — it spares me the sticker shock at the end and I know the crew is taken care of. You can have them removed at Guest Services if you'd rather tip your own way, but honestly, I've never looked at that charge and felt the crew didn't earn it.

What About Luxury and All-Inclusive Cruise Lines?
Everything above applies to the mass-market lines most people sail — Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess, Norwegian, and similar. If you're on a luxury or true all-inclusive line, tipping works differently, and it's worth knowing before you're standing at Guest Services confused about a charge that isn't there.
Regent Seven Seas and Silversea build gratuities fully into the fare. Tipping isn't expected — crew are paid so they aren't tip-dependent, though many guests still tip for standout service. The one exception on both lines: spa treatments, which carry their own gratuity.
Seabourn takes it a step further — its policy states gratuities are neither required nor expected, full stop.
Virgin Voyages used to fold tips into the fare with no separate charge at all. As of October 2025, that changed: gratuities are now itemized separately rather than bundled in, running about $20 per person per night if prepaid or $22 if paid onboard. The total cost of the cruise didn't go up — it's just shown as a line item now instead of hidden inside the fare. If you booked before that date under a legacy fare, you may still have gratuities fully included — worth double-checking your invoice.
Viking markets itself as all-inclusive (free shore excursion, wine with meals, Wi-Fi), but gratuities are not included — Viking still adds a discretionary daily service charge (currently in the high teens to $20 per person, per day) separately from the fare, plus 15% on bar and beverage tabs.
The takeaway: "all-inclusive" and "no tipping" aren't the same thing. Always check your specific line's current policy before you sail — these change more often than you'd think.
A Few Cash Tips
Onboard is basically cashless — everything goes on your stateroom account. But bring small bills for tipping, and cash for port days. Many vendors, taxis, and independent tour operators are cash-only, and US dollars are widely accepted on Caribbean itineraries. Lesson learned the hard way: I once assumed a Belize excursion took cards, came up short, and had to scramble. One quick call ahead would've saved me the stress. And, please make sure to use a credit card that offers no foreign transaction fees. You will thank me later.
